Retreat Week Details & Frequently Asked Questions
WHERE ARE WE GOING EXACTLY?
The Upper Engadin is a high-altitude valley renowned for its dramatic landscapes and abundant sunshine. This region is steeped in history, dating back to ancient times when it served as a vital trade route through the Alps. Its unique geography—a blend of glacial-carved valleys, crystalline lakes, and towering peaks—has inspired artists, writers, and explorers for centuries. The area’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its well-preserved villages and historic landmarks, making it a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Nestled within this extraordinary region is the village of Pontresina, a charming alpine retreat with roots that trace back to the Middle Ages. Less than 4 miles from St. Moritz and surrounded by the Bernina Range, Pontresina is a gateway to some of the Alps’ most iconic sights. Its traditional Engadine-style architecture, with beautifully adorned facades, tells the story of its cultural past, while its proximity to glaciers and mountain trails makes it a haven for adventurers. Today, Pontresina seamlessly blends its historical charm with modern amenities, offering visitors a perfect balance of authenticity and comfort.
To get to your retreat home – most start in Zurich. From Zurich, you will take a picturesque train ride through the Alps and on to Pontresina. The Swiss Rail system is one of the best on the planet and is an enjoyment in itself. We advise all groups on how to book the best train route from Zurich that integrates the exceptional Unesco World Heritage Railway on the last leg from Chur to Pontresina. There are specialized train cars available on The Bernina Express that offer a number of specialized train cars with panoramic windows.
WHAT FITNESS LEVEL IS NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE?
Participants of all levels are welcomed, and on days that offer hikes, there can be levels for different people – however, the retreat is in the High Swiss Alps at 6000+ elevation, and requires daily walking to get to and from sites (with inclines and declines), plus use of the Swiss train and bus systems and more. Participants need to travel to Zurich and then take trains to Pontresina and should be fit enough to travel on trains with their luggage, walk at least a mile daily (with some include / decline) with some ease.
WHAT IS THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE LIKE?
This specially curated 7-night / 8-day summer retreat adventure offers a balance of guided excursions and spaciousness. Morning offer breakfast followed by a yoga or movement class with your group leader. All gather again for lunch and them the days adventures. 4 days have afternoon guided offerings and 2 afternoons offer open time to enjoy the Bellavita Spa complex (included!) or other personal interests.
Included summer excursions include:
- Taking the chairlift to Alp Languard for a spectacular hike with sweeping views of the Upper Engadine valley. This high-altitude trek takes you through wildflower-strewn meadows and up to the mountain hut, where you can pause for refreshments and soak in the breathtaking panorama. If you are lucky, you might spot a Streinbock, the mascot of this region.
- A visit to Muottas Muragl – one the most beautiful vantage points above the lakes. Here you can relax and have a coffee enjoying the views, or take one of varying levels of hikes.
- A day visit to the Italian speaking town of Posciavo with it’s medieval architechtire and culinary delicacies. To visit Poschiavo, we take the UNESCO railway that may be the most beautiful in Switzerland.
- We’ll take the cable cars to Diavolezza, a dramatic mountain destination where, at 9000′ you can marvel at glaciers and enjoy panoramic views that seem to stretch forever.
- Finally, we’ll visit the serene beauty of the Lake of Sils, whose reflective waters are framed by majestic peaks and tranquil landscapes—perfect for quiet contemplation or lakeside strolls. We’ll have lunch, then take a baot across to Isola for a walk along the lake in all it’s splendor.
Participants also have 2 full afternoons of free time. During this free time, there are ample hiking opportunities, mountain bike (and e-bike) rentals, opportunities to horse ride, or take a horse drawn carriage to the Val Roseg Valley of unspoiled nature, glistening streams, dense pine forests, and the dramatic peaks of the Bernina Range as your backdrop.
The biggest challenge is choosing with so many nature based options available!

NOTE – We have a couple March group winter skiing and cross country packages also available! please inquire directly: info@switzerlandyogaretreat.com for that package and itinerary.
WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?
The weather of Pontresina is delightful year round (in our opinion!) Because of the higher altitude, cool temps and sunny skies are abundant. In June, spring is becomming summer and in September, summer is turning into to spectacular autumn colors. Temperatures can range from the 30’s to 60’s F, so packing and wearing funcional layers is useful!
FOOD?
We can accommodate most special requests – omnivore, vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free. But also consider that the food in Switzerland is clean, very local and organic and many items you may not eat at home, you might be wiling to try in the Alps!
WHERE WILL WE BE STAYING?
Your home for the week is the most centrally located and modern Hotel Allegra. Hotel Allegra is the only hotel in Pontresina with direct (and included) access to the Bellavita Spa complex complete with indoor and outdoor pools, relaxation rooom, sauna, steam and more.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Each listed retreat on the “Retreats” page is being hosted by an independent yoga studio or teacher. The links will take you to their personal website with information about their retreat. We encourage you to visit those websites, and reach out to that studio / teacher if you need additional information about the types of classes being offered, the age range of participants and fitness level recommended. Some groups are more leisurely and some might be incorporating bigger hikes. If you are a teacher and are interested in bringing your group for a retreat, please contact us via the contact page.
This experience in Switzerland was beauty inside and out. The community that was built throughout the week brought me to peace within. The trust and safety knowing that you are surrounded by like minded people and with leaders who always have your best interests in mind, allow you to relax into being you.
